Gloria Maria Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo Italian exhibition of Rafaël Rozendaal “To Walk The Night”.
Born in Amsterdam in 1980, Rozendaal has lived and held exhibitions all over the world, Los Angeles, Berlin, Tokyo and London amongst others. Rozendaal is a leading figure of computer art, he creates highly abstract interactive websites as art pieces and sells their domains as collectibles.
His work has a very strongly defined aesthetic – almost simplistic in its approach but executed with a sharp intelligence. He describes the virtual window of a browser being richer than a window in the real world. Working with transient and disposable media reminiscent of Warhol’s consumable art practice Rozendaal seeks inspiration from modernist paintings and animated cartoons. In the last 10 years he has created a strong web presence and his websites have generated 1.2 million unique visits monthly.
Rozendaal is willing to expose his web artworks as objects of speculation, much like contemporary art pieces exhibited in an art gallery, but internet - his chosen “gallery” - is much more accessible. Though the pieces are exhibited freely on the internet, the artist decided to display at Gloria Maria Gallery an installation consisting of drawings and mirrors. While disarmingly simple, Rafaël Rozendaal’s drawings unfold in complexity through their boldness of concept.
Rafaël Rozendaal lives and works between Amsterdam, Berlin and Rio. He has had solo exhibitions at Sketch, London 2005, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2006 and NIMK Nederlands Instituut voor Mediakunst in 2010. Group shows include, The Whitney Biennial 2002, NYC, Neen Demo, Benaki Museum, Athens 2006, Existential Computing, 2007 at The Hayward Gallery, London and Kunsthalle Athena in 2010. He was awarded Rhizome commission for The New Museum, NYC in 2008 and 2010. Rozendaal took part to the File Festival and Rojo Nova Festival both held in Rio de Janeiro, in 2011. He has been also invited to present his work at the DLD 2011 conference, curated by Johannes Fricke in Munich.
Rozendaal is also the founder of BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer) www.byobworldwide.com a series of one-night international exhibitions, soon to be hosted by the 2nd Internet Pavilion during the Venice Biennale, at the prestigious location of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia on the Island San Servolo.

Rozendaal si distingue in quanto figura preminente della Computer Art creando opere d’arte che sono websites interattivi astratti realizzati con flash design sperimentale. Il suo lavoro risponde ad un’estetica fortemente personale e definita - in apparenza semplice, ma eseguita con una logica acuta - in cui l’ artista descrive la finestra virtuale di un browser come una possibilita’ di sperimentazione enormemente più ricca rispetto ad una finestra reale.
Lavorando con media transitori, che ricordano la pratica dell'arte riproducibile di Warhol, Rozendaal trae la propria ispirazione da dipinti modernisti e fumetti vintage. Negli ultimi 10 anni ha costruito una forte presenza in rete ed i suoi websites vengono visitati da 1,2 milioni di persone al mese.
Rozendaal concepisce i suo lavori artistici digitali online come oggetti di speculazione, come opere d'arte contemporanea da esibire in uno spazio espositivo classico, fermo restando che internet - la sua galleria ideale - garantisce una maggiore accessibilità e fruizione. Seguendo questo pensiero, secondo cui le opere online devono essere esibite e fruibili in maniera completamente libera, l'artista ha deciso di esporre presso Gloria Maria Gallery un'installazione di disegni e specchi, lasciando la visione dei suoi websites online.
Rafaël Rozendaal, nato ad Amsterdam nel 1980, vive e lavora tra la citta’ natale, Berlino e Rio. Ha tenuto mostre personali presso Sketch, Londra 2005; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 2006 e NIMK Nederlands Instituut voor MediaKunst, Amsterdam, 2010. Tra le sue mostre collettive ricordiamo The Whitney Biennal nel 2002, NYC, Neen Demo, Benaki Museum, Atene, 2006, Existential Computing, The Hayward Gallery, Londra, 2007 e Kunsthalle Athena, 2010. Nel 2008 e nel 2010 gli e’ stato conferito il Rhizome Award Commission for The New Museum, NYC. Rozendaal ha, inoltre, preso parte al File Festival e al Rojo Nova Festival, entrambi tenutisi a Rio de Janeiro nel 2011. E' stato invitato a presentare il suo lavoro alla Conferenza DLD 2011, curata da Johannes Fricke a Monaco. Sempre nel 2011 e’ stato presentato il suo libro “Domain Names 2010-2001” pubblicato da Automatic Books.
Rozendaal è anche l'ideatore di BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer), un nuovo format espositivo che coinvolge artisti e curatori diversi in ogni citta’ in cui viene proposto www.byobworldwide.com - BYOB verrà presentato dal Padiglione Internet a Venezia, il 2 Giugno, in occasione della prossima 54a Biennale, e avrà luogo nella prestigiosa sede dell'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, Isola di San Servolo.
