La SRISA Gallery presenta il progetto di Rebecca Olsen, composto di un installazione e di una serie di azioni collaborative: Invisible Cities, dal 3 marzo all’8 aprile. Nata a Firenze da una famiglia statunitense, Olsen è cresciuta tra il Texas e la Toscana, due mondi che hanno influenzato il suo lavoro e il suo interesse verso un’arte pensata per comprendere in profondità queste due culture.
I lavori presentati in questa mostra hanno origine nella sua mostra “River of Consciousness”, tenutasi alla Hunt Gallery di St. Louis nel febbraio 2021. L’artista ha usato questa mostra come punto di partenza per Invisible cities; il lavoro presentato negli spazi della SRISA comprende numerosi dipinti, sculture e video ispirati dalla mostra precedente.
All’ingresso il pubblico avrà l’opportunità di partecipare a un disegno collaborativo pensato per introdurlo nel processo dell’artista. La sua relazione con la linea e la forma è sia fortemente personale, sia un modo per la trasmissione di pensieri, la trascrizione di memorie e la focalizzazione dell’attenzione. Olsen considera tutto il suo lavoro come un’estensione del disegno: da qui il suo desiderio di coinvolgere il pubblico nella prossimità di questo medium.
Le opere esposte creano un’esperienza immersiva. È possibile toccare le sculture nere in legno o guardare, ascoltare e entrare in dialogo con il lavoro. Tavolette e altri materiali da disegno sono a disposizione del pubblico che è invitato a utilizzarli. L’artista desidera che questa mostra metta in evidenza la doppia vocazione della Srisa Gallery, come spazio di promozione per le arti e come strumento per ispirare gli studenti della scuola.
In Invisible Cities, Olsen esplora i processi dell’arte e dell’esperienza personale. Così, le opere offrono uno spaccato di come mappiamo, creiamo, elaboriamo, distruggiamo e infine rielaboriamo quei processi. La città diventa metafora dell'esperienza umana e della caducità del tempo e dello spazio, con la conseguente incapacità di fermare il tempo.
Lavorando a questa mostra Olsen ha visto emergere un nuovo lavoro nella forma di una griglia di pannelli, 25x25, dipinti su legno. L’artista ha iniziato a espandere questo lavoro oltre i confini della cornice attraverso la creazione di mappe mentali. Ispirandosi ai dettagli del suo stesso lavoro Olsen ha avviato l’esplorazione di forme personali utilizzando proprie opere, vecchie e nuove, e opere della propria madre, anche lei artista.
Nella sua visione le mappe l’hanno proiettata verso se stessa, facendole scoprire temi che attraversano tutta la sua ricerca. Attraverso l’arte Olsen ha scoperto un suo mondo di forme, immagini e influenze che l’hanno aiutata a traslare il passato in nuove opere. Questo processo, inoltre, l’ha incoraggiata a cercare la partecipazione del pubblico come complemento per la mostra.
Rebecca Olsen è un'artista multimediale che vive in Italia, nata a Firenze da genitori artisti americani e cresciuta a San Antonio, Texas. Negli ultimi vent'anni come direttore esecutivo e co-fondatore della SRISA, Santa Reparata International School of Art, ha contribuito a trasformare la SRISA in una delle principali scuole d'arte di Firenze. Come artista ha esposto il suo lavoro a livello internazionale ed è attualmente rappresentata dalla galleria Whitegrid di Berlino. Come co-curatore della SRISA Gallery, Rebecca ha curato e co-curato quasi 40 mostre lavorando con artisti e curatori per far evolvere la SRISA Gallery in uno spazio artistico non-profit riconosciuto a livello nazionale e internazionale che ospita artisti da tutto il mondo.

SRISA Gallery will host Rebecca Olsen’s installation and drawing collaborative: Invisible Cities from 3 March - 8 April. Olsen was born in Florence to American parents and raised in both Texas and Tuscany. These two worlds have shaped her work and interest in utilizing art to better comprehend the different cultures she inhabits.
The works in the show were born from her previous exhibition “River of Consciousness” exhibited last year at the Hunt Gallery in St. Louis, February 2021. She used that exhibition as a point of departure for Invisible Cities and the work seen throughout SRISA’s exhibition hall and gallery consists of several paintings, sculptures, and videos that take inspiration from that show.
In the entrance of the building the audience will have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative drawing designed to engage them with the artist’s process. Her relationship to line and form is both personal to her history and a way of translating thoughts, transcribing memory, and focusing attention. She sees all her work as drawing: thus, her desire to engage people with the intimacy of the medium.
Olsen’s pieces exhibited in the gallery create an immersive experience. One can handle the wood block sculptures, and is invited to look, listen, and engage with the work itself. At the entrance of the gallery clip boards and drawing materials are available and the audience is encouraged to draw. The artist’s desire is that the exhibition underlines the role the gallery serves as both a promoter of art and as a tool to inspire and teach those who study in the school.
In Invisible Cities, Olsen explores process, engagement, and personal history. The works for Invisible Cities offer an insight into how we map, create, elaborate, destroy, and eventually re-elaborate those processes. The city as a metaphor for the human experience and the transience of time and space with the incapacity to hold any one moment frozen in time. A process she sees as akin to the ever-evolving city.
As Olsen developed the art for this exhibition a new work emerged in the creation of a grid of 25x25 cm. paintings on wood. Olsen began to expand this piece beyond the boundaries of the frame through the creation of a mental map. In this piece inspired by the details of her work the artist began to explore personal forms by utilizing both her old and newer works as well as drawings from her artist mother’s work.
She believes the maps have led her back to the self, and as a result she has discovered themes that connect through her entire career. By making art, she has discovered her world of forms, icons and influences that have helped her translate her past into new works of art. A process that has additionally encouraged her to invite the audience to participate in the completion of the exhibition.
Rebecca Olsen, is an Italy based multi-media artist, born in Florence, Italy to American artist parents and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Over the last twenty years as Executive Director and co-founder of SRISA, Santa Reparata International School of Art, she has helped to build SRISA into one of the leading art schools in Florence, Italy. As an artist she has exhibited her work internationally and is currently represented by the Whitegrid gallery in Berlin. As co-curator of the SRISA Gallery, Rebecca curated and co-curated the nearly 40 exhibitions working with artists and curators to build SRISA Gallery into a nationally and internationally recognized non-profit Art space for Artists from around the globe.
