Galleria Six is pleased to present the exhibition of works by the British artist Richard Smith (1931 - 2016) among the most influential artists of his generation.
He was born in Hertfordshire and he studied at the Royal College of Art, London from 1954-57, alongside artists such as Peter Blake and Robyn Denny. In 1959 Smith was awarded the prestigious Harkness Fellowship which facilitated his move to New York, where he has remained for two years. During this time, Smith was able to observe form and colour featured in the iconography and consumerism of the 1960s. In this period he had his first solo show at Green Gallery. He participated in some of the most important exhibitions of his time, such as Place at the ICA in 1959, Situation at RBA Galleries in 1960 and Painting and Sculpture of a Decade at Tate in 1964.
After being awarded the Grand Prize at the 9th São Paulo Biennial in 1967 and participating in Documenta IV, Kassel in 1968, Smith represented Britain at the 1970 Venice Biennale and was awarded the CBE in 1971. Seven Exhibitions 1961-75, a major retrospective, was held at Tate in 1975.
Richard Smith is part of the generation of great British artists who succeeded Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud (some figurative artists such as David Hockney, Malcolm Morley and Derek Boshier, and others who were faithful to abstract art such as Howard Hodgkin and John Walker).
Richard Smith's works exhibited at Galleria Six in Milan date from the 1970s and the more painterly period of the 1990s.

But when an exceptional British artist looks back to Constable and Turner, incorporating their technical skills and capacity to create texture and radiance in a thoroughly modern revision, then the result can be a Howard Hodgkin, a David Hockney, or a Richard Smith. Within this charmed circle, Smith was unique in his ability not only to revive and maintain tradition, but also to push painting forward to the point that it could stand with the most progressive, radical, and inventive art of its time ".

Many of Richard Smith's works are part of prestigious public collections including the Arts Council England; The British Museum, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; MIT, Boston; and Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Nato nell'Hertfordshire, ha studiato al Royal College of Art di Londra dal 1954 al 1957, accanto ad artisti come Peter Blake e Robyn Denny. Nel 1959 Smith ha ricevuto la prestigiosa Harkness Fellowship che ha facilitato il suo trasferimento a New York, dove è rimasto per due anni. Durante questo periodo Smith ha potuto osservare la forma e il colore presenti nell'iconografia e nel consumismo degli anni '60 ed ha avuto la sua prima mostra personale alla Green Gallery. "Gli inglesi sono meglio conosciuti per le loro immense conquiste letterarie piuttosto che per i loro contributi segnaletici alla storia della pittura. Ma quando un eccezionale artista britannico guarda indietro a Constable e Turner, incorporando le loro abilità tecniche e la capacità di creare texture e luminosità in una revisione completamente moderna, allora il risultato può essere un Howard Hodgkin, un David Hockney, o un Richard Smith. All'interno di questo circolo incantato, Smith è stato unico nella sua capacità non solo di far rivivere e mantenere la tradizione, ma anche di spingere la pittura in avanti al punto che poteva stare con l'arte più progressista, radicale e inventiva del suo tempo ".
