Istituto Svizzero is pleased to present “Skulptur/ Fotografie”, a solo presentation by artist Roman Signer.

Roman Signer is counted amongst the most renowned contemporary Swiss artists with an extremely versatile body of work encompassing various disciplines such as sculpture, drawing, happening, installation-work, photography, and video.

Signer is best known for his ephemeral time sculptures, with their ties to process, transformation and movement, and which have contributed to the redefinition of the very concept of sculpture since the mid-seventies. His creative process often reveals, by means of a structured suspension in time, what is scarcely, or very seldom, visible. His sculptural works exist as experimental movements where the process is more important than the visual appearance, collections of passing moments where slight transformations of shape and matter occur. The artist’s sculpture/actions are free to unfold their dynamism and what remains is not explicitly physical, but rather a mental recapitulation of the foregone process. Signer looks for ‘some-thing’ to happen, and for some things to remain.

Signer is a master of experiments, as he is one of the biggest dreamers. Within his concept of sculpture, the three dimensions of space—in the classical sense—are complemented by the dimension of time. Engaging the time-space continuum, he uses the “object” to change one's relationship with the space one finds themselves in, and this correspondence , constantly in flux, possesses a potential which Signer transforms into a dynamic force and with which he explores the world, all the while maintaining a subtle irony all his own.

Recurring themes in his oeuvre such as explosions, spring, colours, fatal issues, are simultaneously beautiful and extremely abstract; the objects related to these actions are charged both with childhood memories as well as their innate functions, transforming these into metaphors of life. It can be said the true protagonist in Signer’s work is not man, but nature. In his words: “I have an almost magic attitude towards nature; I only half finish many objects I make and want nature to continue, to somehow flow in and manifest itself. […] Nature first makes the sculpture.”

For his solo show in Rome, Signer will present sculptures and photographs from different times of his prolific production. In particular, he will exhibit some of his early black and white photographs, which document his action/sculptures and highlight the importance of context.

Roman Signer was born in Appenzell (Switzerland) in 1938. Starting from the early 70’s his artistic research focuses on his new concept of sculpture, tied to process, transformation and movement. Utilising everyday objects, materials and natural phenomenon he creates kinetic installations, actions and experiments, besides creating explosions which he documents with video and photographs. He was commissioned public installations for the cities of Du¨sseldorf (Germany), Vaduz (Liechtenstein), Solothurn, Appenzell (Switzerland) e Nantes (France). He participated in Dokumenta 8 (1987) and in Skulptur Projekte Münster, 1997. In 1999, he represented Switzerland at the Biennale of Venice. Roman Signer lives and works in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Roman Signer è uno dei più famosi artisti svizzeri contemporanei. Il suo corpo di lavoro è molto versatile e comprende varie discipline quali: scultura, disegno, happening, installazione, fotografia e video.

È conosciuto soprattutto dalla metà degli anni settanta per le sue effimere sculture temporali con cui ha contribuito alla ridefinizione del concetto stesso di scultura legandolo alle idee di processo, trasformazione e movimento. La sua metodologia rivela spesso, attraverso una sospensione strutturata nel tempo, ciò che è raramente o molto raramente visibile. È un momento fugace in cui avvengono piccole metamorfosi di forma e materia. Le azioni/sculture dell’artista si dispiegano liberamente nel loro dinamismo e ciò che rimane non è esplicitamente fisico, ma piuttosto una ricapitolazione mentale del processo concluso/trascorso. L’artista ha il desiderio costante che "qualcosa" accada e che altre cose rimangano.

Signer è un maestro negli esperimenti, poiché è uno dei più grandi sognatori. Il suo concetto di scultura legato alle tre dimensioni dello spazio - nel senso classico del termine – è affiancato alla dimensione del tempo. Utilizzando il continuum spazio-temporale, egli usa “l’oggetto" per modificare la propria relazione con lo spazio in cui si trova, e questa corrispondenza – costantemente in flusso– possiede un potenziale che Signer trasforma in forza dinamica con cui lui esplora il mondo, sempre mantenendo una sottile ironia.

Temi ricorrenti nella sua produzione quali esplosioni, primavera, colori, problemi fatali, sono allo stesso tempo belli ed estremamente astratti; gli oggetti soggetti di queste azioni sono investiti sia da ricordi d'infanzia che delle loro funzioni innate, diventando metafore di vita. Il vero protagonista del lavoro di Signer non è l'uomo, ma la natura. L’artista afferma: "Ho un atteggiamento quasi magico nei confronti della natura; finisco solo la metà di molti oggetti che creo e voglio che la natura continui, e che in qualche modo fluisca e si manifesti. [...] La natura è la prima a creare la scultura. "

Per la sua personale a Roma presenterà sculture e fotografie provenienti da diversi periodi della sua prolifica produzione. In particolare esporrà alcune delle sue prime fotografie in bianco e nero inedite che documentano le sue azioni/sculture e che sottolineano l’importanza del contesto.

Roman Signer è nato ad Appenzell (Svizzera) nel 1938. Fin dai primi anni Settanta incentra la sua ricerca artistica su un nuovo concetto di scultura, legato alla processualità, alla trasformazione e al movimento. Per le sue installazioni cinetiche, le azioni e la serie di “esperimenti” utilizza oggetti quotidiani, materiali e fenomeni naturali, oltre a provocare vere e proprie esplosioni che documenta con video e fotografie. Ha realizzato installazioni pubbliche per le città di Du¨sseldorf (Germania), Vaduz (Liechtenstein), Solothurn, Appenzell (Svizzera) e Nantes (Francia). Ha partecipato a Documenta 8 nel 1987 e a Skulptur Projekte nel 1997. Nel 1999 ha rappresentato la Svizzera alla Biennale di Venezia. Roman Signer vive e lavora a St. Gallen, Svizzera.
