IIl Museo Civico di Castelbuono, in occasione del Ypsigrock Festival 2015, è lieto di presentare le due mostre As unreal as everything else di Seb Patane e Grand Hotel ed des Palmes di Luca Trevisani in collaborazione con l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Parigi e il Museo Naturalistico Francesco Minà Palumbo di Castelbuono, a cura di Laura Barreca e Valentina Bruschi.
I due progetti sono realizzati in collaborazione con Ypsigrock Festival, eletto quest’anno miglior Festival di musica d’Italia che presenta una nutrita line-up con le esibizioni uniche in Italia di Future Islands, Metronomy, Battles, The Sonics, Temples, East India Youth, Bipolar Sushine, The Fat White Family oltre alle attese tappe del tour italiano dei Notwist e di Micah P. Hinson, ai quali si aggiungono i concerti di Be Forest e Clap! Clap!. Durante i concerti del Festival (7, 8 e 9 agosto, dalle 21) verranno presentate le opere video degli artisti sulla facciata del medievale Castello dei Ventimiglia, trasformando la piazza e l’architettura del Castello in una gigantesca superficie visuale e per condividere l’attività di ricerca del Museo con lo spirito di sperimentazione contemporanea audio-visuale che anima il festival.
Nella mostra As Unreal as Everything Else, Seb Patane presenta un nuovo video sulla pratica dei Book Club, gli incontri dove i membri del gruppo si riuniscono per discutere di un libro scelto. L’artista, la scorsa primavera, ha organizzato un “Book Club” con gli amici dell’associazione GRU di Giarre, per parlare del racconto breve La Nebbia, della scrittrice inglese Anna Kavan. Il video ruota intorno all’idea della nebbia, come metafora di distacco o anche protezione dai contatti e dalle relazioni umane. Il suono del video è stato realizzato dal nuovo progetto musicale dell’artista, Fog School, con una serie di collaboratori tra Catania e Berlino. Insieme a Book Club sarà presentato al pubblico il video Year of the Corn, un video ipnotico di sei minuti in cui la relazione tra la componente visuale e la ricerca musicale è determinante. Sarà inoltre in mostra una versione inedita di Absolute Korperkontrolle, con una grande stampa su tela di un’immagine fotografica che ritrae degli scalatori durante una spedizione sulla vetta del K2, tra i quali l’occultista Alesteir Crowley, che ha vissuto a Cefalù, non lontano da Castelbuono, dove fondò la famosa Abbazia di Thélema, dunque una presenza strettamente legata alla storia del territorio.
Grand Hotel et des Palmes di Luca Trevisani è un progetto realizzato in collaborazione con l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Parigi, con il Museo Naturalistico Francesco Minà Palumbo di Castelbuono e con la collaborazione del Grand Hotel delle Palme di Palermo. Un progetto in fieri sviluppato attraverso una serie di mostre, tenute recentemente negli Istituti Italiani di Cultura di Parigi e di Madrid, dedicate al rapporto tra mondo vegetale, paesaggio, e sguardo antropocentrico. che prende in esame le proprietà strutturali della visione e il suo rapporto problematico con la realtà. A Castelbuono l’artista continua la sua ricerca estetica sul nostro personale sistema percettivo, ed esamina la comprensione del mondo naturale attraverso la sua riduzione in immagini. Le opere in mostra sono frutto di un lavoro di ricerca durato diversi mesi, grazie alla collaborazione con il Museo Minà Palumbo, la cui collezione botanica e l’importante erbario ottocentesco che raccoglie le specie erbacee del territorio siciliano delle Madonie è stata oggetto di studio e di ispirazione per i lavori di Luca Trevisani. Il titolo del progetto deriva dal nome del celebre albergo palermitano nel quale venne ritrovato il corpo senza vita di Raymond Roussel, scrittore francese amato dai Surrealisti e tra i fondatori della Patafisica, scienza delle costruzioni immaginarie, suicidatosi il 14 luglio del 1933. Eccentrico, dandy e autore di culto, Roussel è rievocato dall’artista in quanto appassionato difensore della libertà di espressione, simbolo del potere rivoluzionario della fantasia, concetto presente in tutta la ricerca artistica di Trevisani.
Le mostre sono accompagnate da due pubblicazioni, edite da Kalòs Edizioni d’Arte, con testi critici di Luca Cerizza, scrittore, critico d’arte e curatore. Al termine della mostra, un’opera di Luca Trevisani e di Seb Patane - commissionate e prodotte dal Museo Civico di Castelbuono - entreranno a far parte della collezione permanente del Museo Civico.

Seb Patane (nato a Catania nel 1970, vive e lavora a Londra) La ricerca di Patane, tra astrazione e figurazione, si muove tra la suggestione del racconto e la sua forma come frammento. Un ritorno allo studio delle pratiche rituali, Patane lavora intorno a riferimenti complessi, simboli e segni, che toccano diversi elementi, a seconda del contesto privato di ogni spettatore. L’artista utilizza diverse fonti, dal cinema alla letteratura, dalla cronaca alla storia dell’arte per assemblare e ricostruire immagini, attraverso video, fotografie, sculture e installazioni, dove la stratificazione di materiali diversi esprime l’ambiguità dell’archetipo, con tutta la sua carica simbolica. Luca Trevisani (nato a Verona 1979, vive tra l’Italia e la Germania). La sua ricerca spazia tra scultura e video, e le discipline difficilmente inquadrabili in un’unica categoria, quali le arti dello spettacolo, grafica, design, cinema di ricerca o dell'architettura. Nelle sue installazioni le caratteristiche della scultura sono messe in discussione e addirittura sovvertite. L'instabilità è una caratteristica del suo lavoro, una condizione evolutiva mutante che si espande e si contrae senza fermare i confini tra ciascun elemento del lavoro e dell'ambiente. The Museo Civico di Castelbuono, on the occasion of the 2015 edition of Ypsigrock Festival, is pleased to present two exhibitions: As unreal as everything else by Seb Patane and Grand Hotel des Palmes by Luca Trevisani, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Paris and the Museo Naturalistico Francesco Mina Palumbo of Castelbuono, curated by Laura Barreca and Valentina Bruschi.
The two projects have been organised in collaboration with Ypsigrock Festival, elected this year as Italy’s best music festival, which presents a very interesting line-up of international musicians, as Future Islands, Metronomy, Battles, The Sonics, Temples, East India Youth, Bipolar Sushine, The Fat White Family, moreover the participation of Notwist e di Micah P. Hinson, Be Forest and Clap! Clap!. During the programmed concerts (from 9.00 p.m on August 7, 8 and 9), video works by the artists will be projected onto the façade of the medieval Ventimiglia Castle, transforming the square and the castle into a gigantic screen, connecting the Museum’s research activities to the spirit of contemporary audio-visual experimentation that animates the festival.
The exhibition, As unreal as everything else by Seb Patane comprises a new video made by the artist around the idea of Book Clubs, those meetings where members of a club get together to discuss a chosen book. The artist has organised one with his friends of the Associazione GRU in Giarre, having distributed a few weeks before a short story, The Fog, by the English writer Anna Kavan. The video revolves around the idea of fog, a metaphor of separation or perhaps, protection from contacts and human relations. The soundtrack of the video was made by the artist’s new musical project, Fog School, that involves a series of collaborations with musicians between Catania and Berlin. Together with Book Club also Year of the Corn, will be presented to the public, a hypnotic six-minute video in which the relationship between the visual and musical component is fundamental. The artist will also present a new version of Absolute Korperkontrolle, with a large canvas print of a photograph of mountain climbers - including the occultist Aleister Crowley - on an expedition to the summit of K2. Crowley founded his famous Abbey of Thélema in 1920, in Cefalù - not far from Castelbuono - and is therefore a presence which references the territory.
Grand Hotel et des Palmes by Luca Trevisani is a project realised in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Paris, the Museo Naturalistico Francesco Minà Palumbo in Castelbuono and the Grand Hotel et des Palmes in Palermo. A project in the making, developed through a series of exhibitions – which were recently held at the Italian Institutes of Culture in Paris and Madrid - dedicated to the relationship between the plant world and landscape, from an anthropocentric point of view. In Castelbuono, the artist continues his aesthetic research on our personal perceptual system, based on the senses and examines our understanding of the world through its reduction into images. The works on display are the result of a research lasting many months, made in collaboration with the Mina Palumbo Museum, whose botanical collection and the important nineteenth century herbarium (that comprises the local herbaceous species of the Madonie mountains), was the subject of research and inspiration for the work of Luca Trevisani. The title of the project chosen by the artist comes from the name of the famous hotel in Palermo where the lifeless body of Raymond Roussel was found after committing suicide on July 14th of 1933. The French writer, beloved by the Surrealists, was among the founders of the Pataphysics, the science of imaginary solutions. Roussel, eccentric dandy and cult author, is evoked by the artist as a passionate defender of freedom of expression, a symbol of the revolutionary power of imagination, a very important concept throughout the whole artistic research of Luca Trevisani.
The exhibitions are accompanied by two publications edited by Kalòs Edizioni d’Arte, with critical texts by writer, art critic and curator Luca Cerizza.
At the end of the exhibition, a work by Luca Trevisani and one by Seb Patane - commissioned and produced by the Museo Civico di Castelbuono - will become part of the permanent collection of the Museum.
Artists Biographies:
Seb Patane (born in Catania in 1970, lives and works in London). Patane’s research, between abstraction and figuration, moves between the fascination for narration and its shape as a fragment. A return to the study of ritual practices, Patane works around complex references, symbols and signs, which comprise different elements, depending on the personal view of each observer. The artist uses a variety of sources, from cinema to literature, from news to the history of art in order to assemble and reconstruct images, through video, photographs, sculptures and installations, where the layering of different materials expresses the ambiguity of the archetype, with all its symbolic power. Luca Trevisani (born in Verona in 1979, lives between Italy and Germany). His research ranges between sculpture and video, and cross border disciplines such as performing arts, graphics, design, cinema of research or architecture. In his installations the historic features of sculpture are questioned and even, sometimes, subverted. Instability is a characteristic of his work, a developmental status, magnetic and mutant, that expands and contracts without blocking the boundaries between each element of the work and the environment.
