We are delighted to present an exhibition of works by Silvia Gertsch and Xerxes Ach at our gallery in Zuoz. This follows on from their major presentations at Kunstmuseum Bern in 2015 and the National Museum in Gdansk last year.

The paintings by Silvia Gertsch, in oil behind glass, represent everyday reality, while those by Xerxes Ach, in monochrome layers of egg tempera on cotton, are abstract.

The duo share an unconditional love of painting, a high degree of precision and a way of turning colour into a source of energy. Colours are meant to convey light. Light is the true protagonist in these works.. In the monochrome canvases by Xerxes Ach, colour and light radiate beyond the bounds of the painting itself. In the works by Silvia Gertsch, light transforms figures and landscapes, lending them an almost transcendental dimension. Though the figurative visual syntax of Sylvia Gertsch and the monochromatic paintings by Xerxes Ach could hardly be more different, a dialogue invariably develops between the two.

Silvia Gertsch paints in oil behind glass, basing her motifs on photographs and videos that she has shot and developed herself. The themes she addresses are as classic as they are timeless. She is particularly interested in the human figure and in landscape as well as in the incredibly varied effects of light produced in the painterly process. Her aim is to cast the harmony of humankind and nature in new and contemporary forms. Her strategy is based on contemporary reality. Gertsch does not indulge in the kind of reverie or nostalgia that obscures whatever might disrupt or disturb, but instead, on her forays with her camera, hones in on those aspects that reach beyond the momentary to capture the enduring and the universal. However, it is in her paintings that the existential essence encapsulated in her photographic snapshots becomes a certainty. As a painter, Silvia Gertsch achieves the miracle of imbuing the beauty of a fleeting snapshot with credibility and permanence. This subtle yet powerful beauty is evident in all her paintings.

Xerxes Ach paints with egg tempera on cotton. He makes his own paints by mixing pigments with egg yolk. His visual vocabulary is articulated through the sensuality of experiencing colours presented either in monochrome or in the form of expressive colour compositions. Ach succeeds in pinpointing particular colour sensations amidst the endless diversity of hues and shades, capturing these and turning them into exhilarating abstract colour compositions. Freed from all formal bounds, the desired tonal nuance is distilled from the paint as though it could not possibly exist in a purer or more reduced manifestation. Once Ach has juxtaposed his monochrome fields of colour, the resulting lines of contrast are broken down, giving way to an expressively fluid cadence. Using a large brush, he applies various colours in the finest of layers, building up a surface of almost sculptural appearance that evokes an incredible pictorial depth.

Silvia Gertsch was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1963, and Xerxes Ach in Esslingen. Germany, in 1957. After spending many years in Zurich and living for six years in Bergamo, Italy, they moved in 2010 to Rüschegg in the foothills of the Bernese Alps. In 2015, they had a major exhibition at Kunstmuseum Bern and in 2018 at the National Museum in Gdansk. They have also participated in group exhibitions at Kunsthalle Bern, Kunsthalle Basel, Kunsthalle Zürich and at various museums in Zurich, Bern, Lugano and Munich and have shown their works in solo exhibitions at the galleries of Bischoff in Bern, Monica De Cardenas in Milan and Lugano, Jamileh Weber in Zurich, Kornfeld in Bern and Fuchs in Berlin. Their works are represented in important public and private collections, including Kunsthaus Zürich, Kunstmuseum Bern, Schweizer Mobiliar Versicherung, Credit Suisse, UBS and Unicredit.

Wir freuen uns, eine Ausstellung von Silvia Gertsch und Xerxes Ach in der Galerie in Zuoz ankündigen zu dürfen. Damit schliessen wir an ihre beiden grossen Präsentationen im Kunstmuseum Bern 2015 und im Nationalmuseum Danzig im vergangenen Jahr an.

Die Bilder von Silvia Gertsch schildern Momente alltäglicher Realität und sind hinter Glas gemalt. Die Gemälde von Xerxes Ach sind abstrakt und sind mit Schichten monochromer Ei-Tempera auf Baumwolle gemalt. Das Künstlerpaar verbindet eine bedingungslose Leidenschaft für die Malerei, ein hohes Mass an Präzision sowie die Art und Weise, wie sie Farbe als Träger von Energie einsetzen. Farben sollen Licht übertragen: Das Licht ist der wahre Protagonist dieser Arbeiten. In den monochromen Leinwänden von Xerxes Ach strahlen Farbe und Licht über die Grenzen des Bildträgers hinaus. In den Bildern von Silvia Gertsch verklärt das Licht Figuren und Landschaften und verleiht ihnen eine fast transzendente Dimension. Trotz der markanten Unterschiede zwischen der figurativen Bildsprache von Silvia Gertsch und der monochromen Malerei von Xerxes Ach, entwickelt sich zwischen den Werken stets ein Zwiegespräch.

Silvia Gertsch malt hinter Glas. Ihre Bildvorlagen sind Fotos und Videostills, die sie selbst aufgenommen und bearbeitet hat. Die Themen sind ebenso klassisch wie zeitlos: Ihr Interesse gilt der Figur und der Landschaft, und – in der malerischen Umsetzung – der ungemein vielfältigen Wirkungen des Lichts. Ihr Ziel ist es, die Harmonie von Mensch und Natur in neue, heutige Bilder zu giessen. Ihre Strategie geht von der aktuellen Wirklichkeit aus. Gertsch ist keine träumende Nostalgikerin, die alles Störende ausblendet. Vielmehr findet sie auf ihren Streifzügen mit der Kamera Momente, die über das Augenblickliche hinaus auf Unvergängliches und Allgemeingültiges verweisen. Der im fotografischen Schnappschuss enthaltene existentielle Gehalt wird jedoch erst in der Malerei zur Gewissheit. Als Malerin gelingt Silvia Gertsch das Wunder, der Schönheit eines kurzlebigen Schnappschusses Glaubwürdigkeit und Dauer zu Verleihen. Diese zarte und zugleich starke Schönheit offenbart sich allein in ihrer Malerei.

Xerxes Ach malt mit Ei Tempera auf Baumwolle. Er stellt seine Farben selbst her, in dem er Pigmente mit Eigelb anrührt. Seine Bildsprache drückt sich über sinnliche Farberlebnisse aus, die sich teils als monochrome teils als expressive Farbkompositionen zeigen. Ach schafft es, aus dem Konvolut der unendlichen Farbenvielfalt, spezielle Farbsensationen zu sichten, diese einzufangen und in spannende und abstrakte Farbkompositionen umzusetzen. Befreit von allem Formellen, wird aus der Farbe die gewollte Farbnuance extrahiert, als könnte sie reiner und reduzierter nicht existieren. Hat Ach zuerst monochrome Farbflächen nebeneinander gesetzt, werden jetzt die dadurch entstandene Farbkontrastlinien aufgebrochen und durch einen expressiveren Duktus ersetzt. Mit einem großen Pinsel werden verschiedene Farben hauchdünn und schichtweise aufgetragen, die in ihrer plastischen Erscheinung eine unglaubliche Bildtiefe suggerieren.

Silvia Gertsch wurde 1963 in Bern geboren, Xerxes Ach 1957 in Esslingen a.N. in Deutschland. Nachdem sie viele Jahre in Zürich und sechs Jahre in Bergamo gelebt haben, wohnen sie seit 2010 in Rüschegg in den Berner Voralpen. Sie hatten 2015 eine grosse Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Bern und 2018 im Nationalmuseum in Danzig; sie haben in Gruppen-ausstellungen in den Kunsthallen Bern, Basel, Zürich und in den Museen von Zürich, Bern, Lugano und München ausgestellt, sowie Einzelausstellungen in den Galerien Bischoff in Bern, Monica De Cardenas in Mailand und Lugano, Jamileh Weber in Zürich, Kornfeld in Bern und Fuchs in Berlin gezeigt. Ihre Werke sind in bedeutenden öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen vertreten, z.B. im Kunsthaus Zürich, im Kunstmuseum Bern, der Schweizer Mobiliar Versicherung, Credit Suisse, UBS und Unicredit.

I dipinti di Silvia Gertsch ritraggono attimi di realtà contemporanea e sono realizzati con la tecnica della pittura su vetro. I quadri di Xerxes Ach sono astratti, dipinti a tempera all’uovo su tela. Uniti dalla passione per la pittura, il colore e la luce, i due linguaggi apparentemente opposti del realismo e dell’astrazione diventano complementari e dialogano tra loro.

I dipinti di Silvia Gertsch ritraggono paesaggi e scene di vita all’aperto. Momenti di relax di persone comuni, in cui la luce radente e i suoi forti riverberi smaterializzano in parte visi e corpi, producendo una sorta di trasfigurazione in virtù della quale la dimensione temporale sembra sospendersi e dilatarsi al limite del trascendente. Anche i momenti più sfuggenti o banali dell’esistenza, rivisti con quest’aura, assumono un senso di pacificazione e distanza dalle tensioni del quotidiano. La tecnica che Silvia Gertsch utilizza è la pittura ad olio su vetro applicata dal retro: una tecnica antica, usata raramente, che non permette di fare errori.

I riflessi sul vetro catturano ed amplificano l’aspetto luminoso di questi dipinti.

Le opere di Xerxes Ach sono dipinti astratti. Gli effetti cromatici sono il risultato di una serie di contrapposizioni di strati di colore e mettono apertamente in gioco quelle categorie visivo -sensoriali già oggetto dei monocromi della Radical Painting, che trovano perfetta e naturale rispondenza nelle peculiarità della pittura: luminosità, tonalismo, timbricità, saturazione e opacità. Categorie che percettivamente rimandano al senso di profondità, movimento, estensione nello spazio e che obbligano l’osservatore, esercitando un richiamo diretto alla sfera sensoriale, a una visione lenta e meditativa, a lasciarsi andare e catturare, per sperimentare un’inedita dimensione.

Silvia Gertsch è nata a Berna nel 1963, Xerxes Ach a Esslingen a.N. in Germania nel 1957. Dopo aver vissuto a Zurigo e in Italia, dal 2010 vivono a Rüschegg nella campagna bernese. Hanno esposto in mostre personali presso il museo di Berna nel 2015 e Danzica nel 2018, collettive alla Kunsthalle di Basilea (“Painting on the Move” a cura di Peter Pakesch nel 2002) e nei musei di Zurigo, Berna, Lugano e Monaco di Baviera; nelle gallerie Bischoff di Berna e Monica De Cardenas a Milano e Lugano, Jamileh Weber a Zurigo, Kornfeld a Berna e Fuchs a Berlino. Le loro opere si trovano in importanti collezioni pubbliche e private, tra cui quelle del Kunsthaus Zürich, del Kunstmuseum Bern, della Mobiliare Svizzera, dell’UBS e dell’Unicredit.
