The exhibition presents artwork by Catrin Morgan for the new hardback edition of Ben Marcus' book The Age of Wire and String published by Granta Books. This will be accompanied by a wider body of work which takes the novel as its starting point, developing a language that draws from vintage photos, geological diagrams, and meteorology.
The Age of Wire and String is a classic of innovative fiction, a handbook for surviving in a strange new world both like and unlike our own, one in which language has undergone a surreal revolution and words can no longer be trusted. In approaching the text Catrin Morgan's intention is to make images that introduce a similar revolution to the idea of illustrated fiction.
Catrin Morgan completed an MA in Communication Art and Design at the Royal College of Art in 2008. She has now returned to the RCA in order to undertake a practice based PhD exploring the relationship between illustration and deception. In 2011 she received a scholarship from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust in support of her research. Her first book, Phantom Settlements, a collaborative project with Mireille Fauchon was published in June 2011 by Ditto Press. She teaches at University College Falmouth and Norwich University College of the Arts.
