a.topos Venice for the second edition of THE CREATIVE ROOM, invited artists to dedicate their art to the theme "The Future of Art and the Art of the Future".

The artists involved are: Mário Afonso, Damiano Fasso, Lina Zylla, Sève Favre, Sarah Valente, Doris Schamp, Madalena Corrêa Mendes, Armin Amirian, Lucrezia Costa, Oona Nelson, Constanza Camila Kramer Garfias, Jia-Rey Chang, Elena Xausa e Lorenzo Fonda, Nero Cosmos, Veronika Dräxler, Adélaïde Feriot, Chiara Tubia, Degann, David Michel Fayek, Ian Callender, Finn Theuws, Anna Maconi, Tanguy de Thuret, Lorenzo Peluffo e Fortuna De Nardo, Bernardo Tirabosco, Fadwa Rouhana, Daniela Di Lullo.

For almost two years, the majority of the world’s population was unable to attend any exhibition in a physical space. This new reality was unsurprisingly accompanied by an intense discussion around some of the hottest topics of the period in the art scene - is the virtual realm better than real-world exhibitions? Will digital replace experiencing a show live? Are we witnessing the establishment of a new normal, with the rise of new media hegemony in artistic practice?

Many extensive debates, strained relationships, repetitive arguments and, most of all, many, many, many online exhibitions after, we can take a deep breath and admit that - besides its undeniable contribution to the democratization of Art - virtual is definitely better than nothing. Hopefully, we can also foresee an art scene where both, digital and real, can, if not live happily ever after, at least find a way to peacefully (and in a mutually beneficial way) cohabit. After so much time apart, it’s nice to explore the possibility of encounters. Utopia, Dystopia, and Retrotopia are two of them.

Utopia, Dystopia, Retrotopia

The artworks gathered here are an array of different interpretations about the future, converging into an enlarged horizon of expectation; an immersion in a compelling mixture between optimistic prognosis, cynical readings of the future, and a nostalgic dive into a longing - either experienced or idealized - past.

Opening the narrative, the first show, Utopia, Dystopia, harvests works of art offering either utopic sceneries or gateways to a dystopian tomorrow. The audience is presented with an exhibition path that creates visual and sound spaces shifting between an invitation to sail together instead of adrift and evidence of the burden of times to come.

In the second exhibit, Retrotopia, a world struck by an appalling pandemic and an art scene flooded with NTFs as a backdrop brings past and future to walk sideways in what Zigmund Bauman defined as retrotopia. Either through form, content or both, the displayed artworks depict a strive to (re)establish a mythified - even if unfaithful - past. And in case nostalgically revisiting a longing time does not chase uncertainty away, art can at least attempt righteous grief.

Per quasi due anni, la maggior parte della popolazione mondiale non ha potuto presenziare a nessuna mostra. Questa nuova realtà è stata comprensibilmente accompagnata da un’intensa discussione su alcune delle tematiche più calde della scena artistica: il regno virtuale è migliore delle mostre del mondo reale? Il sostituto digitale rimpiazzerà lo spettacolo dal vivo? Stiamo assistendo all’instaurarsi di una nuova normalità?

Molti dibattiti, discussioni ripetitive e,soprattutto, dopo molte, moltissime mostre online, possiamo fare un bel respiro e ammettere che, oltre che al suo innegabile contributo alla democratizzazione dell’arte, il virtuale è sicuramente meglio di niente. Se tutto va secondo i piani, possiamo prevedere una scena artistica dove, digitale e reale, potranno, se non vivere per sempre felici e contenti, almeno trovare un modo per coabitare pacificamente - a beneficio di entrambi. Così, dopo molto tempo distanti, è bello poter esplorare la possibilità di incontrarsi di nuovo. Utopia,Dystopia e Retrotopia sono due di queste.

Utopia, Dystopia, Retrotopia

Le opere qui riunite sono un insieme di diverse interpretazioni sul futuro, che convergono verso un orizzonte di aspettative allargato; un’immersione tra prognosi ottimistiche, letture di un futuro cinico e un tuffo nostalgico nel passato, vissuto o idealizzato.

La narrazione si apre con la prima esposizione Utopia,Dystopia che raccoglie opere d’arte che offrono insieme scenari utopici e vie per un domani distopico. I visitatori si trovano davanti ad un percorso espositivo che crea spazi visuali e sonori che variano tra l’invito a navigare insieme anziché alla deriva e l’evidenza del peso del tempo che verrà.

Nella seconda mostra, Retrotopia, un mondo scosso da un’angosciante pandemia e da una scena artistica inondata da NTFs come scenario, porta passato e futuro a camminare lateralmente in ciò che Zigmund Bauman ha definito come retrotopia. O attraverso la forma, o il contenuto, o entrambi, le opere esposte rappresentano uno sforzo per ristabilire un passato mitizzato, anche se infedele. E nel caso in cui rivisitare con nostalgia un tempo angosciante non scacci l'incertezza, l'arte può almeno cercare un giusto lutto.
