Unlived by What is Seen è un progetto espositivo curato dagli artisti Sun Yuan & Peng Yu e dal curatore Cui Cancan. La sua preparazione è iniziata nel 2013 e dopo un anno di intense ricerche e approfondimenti, sono stati selezionati ventotto artisti, due organizzazioni e tre collettive.

La mostra, la cui apertura al pubblico è fissata per il prossimo 13 dicembre, coinvolgerà contemporaneamente tre spazi espositivi (Galleria Continua, Pace Gallery e Tang Contemporary Art Center) e sarà possibile visitarla fino al 15 marzo 2015.
Durante l'intero periodo espositivo, sono previste quattro public talks mentre è in programma la pubblicazione di un catalogo per maggio 2015.

Unlived by What is Seen agisce all'interno della nuova direzione intrapresa dall'arte contemporanea cinese a partire dal 2008. Tale direzione si caratterizza per una vera e propria “infiltrazione” dell'arte all'interno di ogni ambito sociale e di ogni aspetto della vita. L'obiettivo di queste forme d'arte non è più mirare a riprodurre delle immagini o oggetti visivi, quanto sviluppare un modus vivendi che interroghi la vita stessa. Partendo da specifici bisogni individuali, la mostra trascende e oltrepassa allo stesso tempo l'angoscia di affrontare la storia (il passato) e la noia della routine quotidiana. Queste necessità ineffabili irrompono nel tessuto sociale senza alcuna sorta di riflessione e mostrano attitudini al distacco da cui si evince il significato profondo della vita. In altre parole, la mostra non è interessata a rapportarsi con gli inflessibili modelli di un'arte che “si produce” piuttosto a riflettere sulla moltitudine di azioni proprie di ciascun individuo.

Dal momento che l'arte è diventata sempre più istituzionalizzata, Unlived by What is Seen esamina cosa accade all'arte quando si inserisce all'interno del mercato, divenendo esperienza pratica. Si interroga anche sulle diverse modalità di un'arte “produttiva” che permette un'effettiva quanto debole circolazione dell'arte stessa. Sebbene si allontani concettualmente dalle tradizionali mostre originatesi meramente per finalità commerciali, ciò nonostante si appropria del medesimo sistema commerciale in modo da alimentare la circolazione del proprio modello concettuale. E' significativo il fatto che nessuno degli artisti abbia realizzato “un'opera” che possa essere “contenuta” interno dello spazio espositivo: la parte più autentica e intensa del proprio lavoro si è già consumata nel momento stesso in cui si è manifestata.
Infatti, proprio nel momento in cui gli artisti trasformano le loro necessità individuali in azione, costringendole all'interno di una loro opera, è in realtà ancora da capire quale sia la vera arte, la parte più pura di queste attività, verificatesi in un altro momento, in un altro luogo, o con una diversa intensità. Di conseguenza la ricerca curatoriale si articola a partire da una progressiva estrapolazione, identificazione e presentazione di tali attività che si verificano all'interno di dinamiche sociali, politiche e interpersonali sforzandosi di portare l'arte oltre i suoi stessi confini. In breve, sarà proprio il voler andare oltre la comune capacità che permetterà agli stessi curatori di liberare l'arte proprio dal sistema in cui essa è rinchiusa.

Essendosi unicamente basati sull'eccezionalità di queste opere, i curatori hanno elaborato un preciso filo logico narrativo, in cui ogni artista racconta esperienze o azioni passate che non possono esser state documentate o che non hanno bisogno di essere rappresentate visivamente.
Tutto questo comporta un processo di sperimentazione da parte dei curatori, degli artisti e delle organizzazioni che non segue standard convenzionali né cerca di sviluppare una bozza per una categorizzazione futura. Sottolineando l'importanza delle azioni stesse e degli eventi che caratterizzano la vita, l'insieme delle “opere” concettuali resiste alle ovvie classificazioni e generalizzazioni, convergendo in un unico punto: finché i visitatori avranno la percezione che la sola “rappresentazione” costituisce l'intero processo creativo, allora qualcosa cesserà di esistere proprio nel momento stesso in cui “l'opera” viene fruita (unlived by what is seen, per l'appunto).

Ci sarà sempre un'attitudine che non diventa materia, ma che proprio attraverso il nostro stesso agire illumina continuamente la nostra vita. Dal momento che l'arte ha già terminato le sue possibilità di cambiamento, esaurendo se stessa nell'estenuante ricerca di novità, è la vita stessa a continuare a cambiare, incurante dei nostri tentativi di intervento.

Unlived by What is Seen is an exhibition curated by the artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu and independent curator Cui Cancan. Preparation of the project began in 2013, and after a year of in-depth communication and exploration, twenty-eight artists were selected, along with two art organizations and three artist groups.

Opening on December 13th, the exhibition will take place simultaneously at Galleria Continua, Pace Gallery Beijing and Tang Contemporary Art Center and lasts for three months. In addition, there will be four public talks presented after the opening, with an exhibition catalogue scheduled for publication in May 2015.

Unlived by What is Seen traces a new direction in Chinese contemporary art emerging since 2008. This new current is characterized by the infiltration of art practices into various social sectors and aspects of life. The goal of these practices is no longer geared toward the production of images or visual objects, but rather developing modes of existence that interrogate life itself. Arising from specific needs of the individual, it transgresses and transcends both the anxiety to enter history and the ennui of daily encounters. These unnameable needs cut into the social fiber without mediation and manifest attitudes of disengagement from which a poetics of life shines forth. In other words, the present exhibition is not interested in dealing with ossified modes of making art, but a multitude of actions taken by individuals.

As contemporary art becomes more institutionalized, Unlived by What is Seen examines what happens to art as it transforms into experiential and discursive transactions. It also questions modes of art production that cater to established, effective but effete systems of circulation. Though distancing itself from exhibitions purely driven by commercial interests, it nevertheless appropriates systems of capital in a way that fuels the movement it seeks to articulate. One significant feature is that none of the artists made their work to be housed inside the exhibition space. The most vibrant and tenacious part of the work has already been consumed by its own flame. As artists address their needs and confusion through action, what remains to be seen is evidence or crystallization of these activities that have taken place elsewhere, in another time, and under a different intensity. Consequently, the work of the curators is centered on the excavation, identification and presentation of these life practices that transpire within a dynamic social, political and interpersonal context as they push art to expand its borders. In short, they are anomalies of life whose adventurous labors will win their freedom.

Based on the unique status of these works, the curator designed an unique form of communication in which the artists were asked to narrate or recount actions, experiences and encounters that can not or need not be documented or visually represented. This also involves a process of experimentation on the part of the curators, the artists and the art organizations. It neither follows conventional standards nor seeks to draft a rubric for the future. By returning art to the actions and happenings of life, the works resist clear classifications and generalizations, yet they convene on one point: as long as viewers take what is in front of them for the whole, something gets unlived by what is seen.

There will always be an attitude that does not translate into form, but through our being in the act, it incessantly flashes before us. As art exhausts itself in the constant pursuit of the new, subtle transformations are already underway in the sphere of life
