Praxis è il terzo evento del ciclo Urban Landscapes-Indian Case Studies in programma all’Accademia Britannica di Roma, e presenta il lavoro degli architetti indiani Studio Mumbai, da tempo al centro di un interesse internazionale.
Prassi è il processo attraverso cui una teoria, lezione o abilità viene attuata, messa in pratica, eseguita o concretizzata. Il termine può anche essere riferito all’attuare, applicare, esercitare, realizzare o mettere in pratica delle idee.
Onnicomprensiva, la prassi dell’architetto, sia essa tangibile, ambigua o teorica, riguarda principalmente la natura dell’essere. Questa impostazione ontologica in Praxis può forse esprimere il modo in cui il lavoro dello Studio Mumbai viene creato attraverso un processo iterativo, in cui le idee vengono esplorate attraverso la produzione di modelli su larga scala, studi di materiali, schizzi e disegni, per formare una parte intrinseca del nostro pensiero e del nostro corpo. I progetti vengono sviluppati attraverso un’attenta considerazione dei luoghi e una pratica che si relaziona attivamente ad ambiente e cultura, e tiene in considerazione il coinvolgimento fisico ed emotivo degli individui interessati; una pratica in cui le tecniche costruttive e i materiali derivano da un’ingegnosità conseguente alla limitatezza delle risorse. La mostra sarà incentrata sul metodo di lavoro, unico nel suo genere, di Studio Mumbai. Per la prima volta saranno presentati gli studi fotografici che descrivono come il fondersi della città formale e di quella informale ha influenzato la creazione dei loro edifici. Nella mostra saranno anche esposti schizzi, disegni esecutivi e video, insieme alle immagini di alcuni degli edifici realizzati, tra i quali la Palmyra House, Tara House, Copper House e altri tra i progetti più importanti. Il visitatore avrà la sensazione di entrare fisicamente nello studio e di viverne l’atmosfera creativa.
Studio Mumbai è stato fondato da Bijoy Jain nel 1995. E’ un gruppo di abili artigiani ed architetti che progettano e costruiscono l'opera direttamente. L'essenza del loro lavoro sta nel rapporto tra terra e architettura. L’impresa consiste nel mostrare la reale possibilità di costruire degli edifici che risultano da un processo di dialogo collettivo e dalla condivisione diretta della conoscenza. Studio Mumbai si è aggiudicato una menzione speciale della giuria alla Biennale di Venezia del 2010 e, nel 2012, ha vinto la BSI Swiss Architectural Award. A settembre 2012, esporrà alla Biennale di Venezia e al Museo d’arte contemporanea di Tokyo.

In particolare si ringrazia lo Studio Urban Design dell'Istituto, guidato da David Sabatello e Jody Patterson, con la partecipazione degli studenti di architettura della Pennsylvania State University e gli studenti di architettura del paesaggio dell'Università del Massachusetts Amherst.
Il 16 ottobre ore 11.00, si terrà al MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo, un incontro fra Bijoy Jain e gli studenti d’architettura.

In Praxis, the third event in Urban Landscapes-Indian Case Studies, The British School at Rome will present the work of the highly acclaimed Indian practice Studio Mumbai.
Praxis is the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, practised, embodied or realized. It may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realizing or practising ideas.
All encompassing, the practice of the architect, whether tangible, ambiguous or theoretical, is primarily concerned with the nature of being. This ontological understanding in Praxis may begin to express how the work at Studio Mumbai is created from an interactive process, where ideas are explored through the production of large-scale mock-ups, material studies, sketches and drawings to form an intrinsic part of our thought and body. Projects are developed through careful consideration of place and a practice that engages intently in an environment and culture, the physical and emotional engagement of the people involved; where building techniques and materials draw from an ingenuity arising from limited resources. The exhibition will concentrate on the unique working method of Studio Mumbai and will present, for the first time, documentary photographic studies that describe how the merging of the formal and informal city has influenced the design of their buildings. Preparatory drawings, working drawings and films will also be exhibited as well as illustrations of the completed work, including Palmyra House, Tara House and Copper House. The spectator will feel transported into the studio of the practice.
Studio Mumbai was founded by Bijoy Jain in 1995. It is a human infrastructure of skilled craftsmen and architects who design and build the work directly. The essence of the work lies in the relationship between land and architecture. The endeavour is to show the genuine possibility in creating buildings that emerge through a process of collective dialogue and a face-to -face sharing of knowledge.
Studio Mumbai was awarded a special mention by the jury at the 2010 Venice Biennale and won the BSI Swiss Architectural Award in 2012. The practice is exhibiting in the 2012 Venice Biennale and at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo in September 2012.
We are grateful to the Pantheon Institute, directed by Romolo Martemucci, for its help with the production of this exhibit. We would particularly like to thank the Institute's Urban Design studio, led by David Sabatello and Jody Patterson, with participating architecture students from Pennsylvania State University and landscape architecture students from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
