La galleria collicaligreggi ha il piacere di annunciare, per l’apertura della nuova stagione 2107/18, la mostra personale di Urs Lüthi dal titolo: LOST DIRECTION & SIMILAR DISASTERS appartenente al ciclo ART IS THE BETTER LIFE che inaugura sabato 7 ottobre alle ore 19.00.
Urs Lüthi è probabilmente l’unico artista europeo, insieme a Gilbert & George, che sin dalla fine degli anni Sessanta ha posto l’autoritratto al centro di una affascinante e complessa autorappresentazione delle relazioni tra arte e vita. Nel 1969, infatti, scatta delle istantanee a piazza Duomo, a Milano, che ritraggono se stesso e i passanti, I’ll be your mirror (con riferimento alla celebre canzone dei Velvet Underground del 1967, scritta da Lou Reed). E come recita il titolo di questa serie fotografica, l’artista si pone come specchio di una “scena” di vita quotidiana. Funzione di specchio, che sin dagli inizi degli anni 70, troverà grande visibilità internazionale (visibilità ancora attuale in una serie di “remix” recenti) in una serie di autoritratti in bianco e nero in cui l’artista compare in forma androgina.
Temi legati alla storia dell’arte, quali l’autoritratto, ma soprattutto temi sociali come l’identità, il genere e più in generale l’essere nel mondo, nella società contemporanea, sono stati affrontati da Lüthi, nella sua vasta esperienza artistica, con una originale e personalissima firma autoriale in cui l’elemento ludico si combina con il tragico tracciando ed evidenziando, come ha affermato l’artista stesso, “il limite sottile che corre tra la risata e la lacrima”.
Dal 2001, e in svariate occasioni espositive, dal Padiglione Svizzero alla Biennale di Venezia sino a un magnifico libro edito dalle Edizioni Periferia di Lucerna, Urs Lüthi ha realizzato una serie di lavori che vanno sotto il titolo significativo (quasi una sorta di manifesto progettuale) di “Art is the Better Life”.
In questi straordinari lavori, la figura autorappresentativa dell’artista si coniuga, si pone in relazione, secondo differenti medium che vanno dalla fotografia alla scultura, con quegli oggetti e rappresentazioni che formano sia la scena che il nostro panorama visivo contemporaneo. La figura dell’artista diviene, in tal modo, sia uno specchio - come nel passato - ma anche un osservatorio privilegiato (come sa esserlo solo la grande arte…) sulla vita e soprattutto sulla società occidentale contemporanea. Una maniera di praticare l’arte che unisce aspetti performativi e vere e proprie mise en scene, concettuali, analitiche e insieme dal forte impatto visivo.
Il titolo di questa sua mostra personale catanese , LOST DIRECTION & SIMILAR DISASTERS, allude a un ciclo di opere in cui Urs Lüthi riflette e rispecchia evidenti sensi e una complessa immagine di smarrimento e di perdita. Negli spazi espositivi della galleria collicaligreggi l’artista ha progettato una grande installazione caratterizzata da una atmosfera dai toni pastello verde e rosa, frutto dei wall drawings realizzati sulle pareti. Una grande scultura in alluminio ritrae l’artista ritorto su se stesso posta su un pretenzioso tappeto di produzione asiatica. Infine, a testimonianza ulteriore di una mostra realizzata in omaggio alla città di Catania (sede della galleria) Lüthi presenta 18 fotografie realizzate recentemente in occasione delle annuali festività di Sant’Agata, patrona della città. La documentazione fotografica delle celebrazioni dedicate a Sant’Agata diviene in questo caso un ulteriore specchio delle contraddizioni, dei meccanismi complessi e ambigui che regolano la nostra vita, in Sicilia ma anche nel mondo occidentale.

To open the new 2017-2018 season, Galleria collicaligreggi is pleased to announce the inauguration of a personal show by Urs Lüthi entitled LOST DIRECTION & SIMILAR DISASTERS, a part of the ART IS THE BETTER LIFE cycle, on Saturday, 7 October at 7.00 pm.
Urs Lüthi is probably the only European artist, other than Gilbert & George who, since the late 1960s, has put the self-portrait at the centre of a fascinating and complex self-representation of the relations between art and life. In 1969, he took some snapshots of himself and passers-by in Piazza Duomo in Milan that he entitled I’ll be your mirror (a reference to the famous 1967 song by the Velvet Underground, written by Lou Reed). As the title of this photographic series proclaims, the artist played the role of mirror in scenes of everyday life. The mirror function acquired great international visibility from the start of the 1970s (and is still visible in a series of recent remixes) with a series of black and white self-portraits in which the artist appeared in androgynous form.
Lüthi, in his vast artistic experience, has examined themes that are the building blocks of art history such identity, gender and, in general, living in the world of contemporary society, with his original and very personal style in which the playful goes arm in arm with the tragic, tracing and highlighting “the subtle line that separates laughing from crying”, as the artist himself puts it. Since 2001, and on the occasion of various shows, from the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale to a magnificent book published by Edizioni Periferia of Lucerne, Urs Lüthi has produced a series of works that are collectively entitled Art is the Better Life (a project manifesto, as it were).
In these extraordinary works, the self-representation of the artist is coupled with or poised in relationship with, depending on the diverse media (ranging from photography to sculpture), the objects and representations that form the contemporary scene and our visual panorama of it. In this way, the figure of the artist becomes both a mirror - as in the past - and a special observatory (as only great art can be) of life and, above all, of Western contemporary society. This manner of expressing art unites aspects of performance and truly conceptual and analytical scenarios that also offer a strong visual impact.
The title of this personal show in Catania, LOST DIRECTION & SIMILAR DISASTERS, alludes to a cycle of works in which Urs Lüthi reflects on and mirrors evident sensations, and a complex image, of disorientation and loss. The artist has designed a large installation, the atmosphere of which is characterized by the green and pink pastel tones of the wall drawings in the exhibition spaces of Galleria collicaligreggi. A large aluminium sculpture, set on a pretentious Asian carpet, portrays the artist in a twisted pose. Finally, as a further demonstration of his esteem for the city of Catania (where the Galleria is located), Lüthi will present 18 photographs taken recently during the festivities for Saint Agatha, patron saint of the city.
In this case, the photographic documentation of the celebrations dedicated to Saint Agatha represents another mirror of the contradictions, the complex and ambiguous mechanisms that regulate our lives, in Sicily and the whole Western world.
