Maurizio Caldirola Arte Contemporanea è lieta di presentare Gardens of the Dragon, mostra personale di Vanni Cuoghi.
Negli spazi della galleria verrà installato un grande disegno eseguito su centinaia di post-it e sarà esposta una serie di quindici dipinti, eseguiti ad acquerello, su confezioni di psicofarmaci.
Le scatole di medicinali, antipsicotici che vengono prescritti quando viene diagnosticata una forma di schizofrenia, vengono aperte, ritagliate e ricostruite al contrario dall’artista così da creare dei piccoli teatrini il cui fondale è costituito dal nome del farmaco stampato sulla confezione.
Su questi lavori, nominati Rimedi, sono dipinte scene di battaglie impossibili tra cavalieri e mostri.
Scrive Vanni Cuoghi: “Tutto il mio lavoro ha da sempre analizzato i meccanismi legati alla narrazione e quello che mi ha affascinato sempre è stato il cortocircuito di immagini che viene innescato da un binomio o un dittico.
Il cortocircuito ha sempre un effetto sorpresa che fa deragliare l’iter logico della narrazione. E’ quello che Alighiero Boetti definiva “La mossa del cavallo” riferita all’andamento a “L” che ha, nel gioco degli scacchi, la pedina del cavallo, l’unica a non seguire un percorso ortogonale o diagonale sulla scacchiera.
Inoltre, l’abilità pittorica, usata come cavallo di Troia, confonde ancora di più le acque: l'illustrazione viene tradita dal supporto che la ospita e il rimando alla battaglia non è più solo di ordine rappresentativo, ma esistenziale. Queste scatole sono state realmente teatri di battaglie quotidiane contro mostri e draghi generati dalla mente.”
Maurizio Caldirola Arte Contemporanea is pleased to present Gardens of the Dragon, a solo show by Vanni Cuoghi.
In the space of the gallery will be installed a great drawing of hundreds of sticky notes and set out a series of fifteen watercoloured paintings on boxes of psychopharmaceuticals.
The packs of meds, antipsychotics, that are prescribed when is diagnosed some form of schizophrenia, are opened, cutted out and rebuilt on the contrary, in order to create little theatres whose bottom is the name of the drug printed on the packaging.
On this work, named Remedies, are painted scenes of unsolvable battles between knights and monsters.
Vanni Cuoghi says: "All my work has constantly analysed the mechanism related to the storytelling and what got me fascinated has always been the short circuit which is trigged by a binomial or diptych.
The blackout has always a surprise effect that derails from the logical process of storytelling. That's what Alighiero Boetti defines the knight's move reported to the particular "L" movement that the knight does in the game of chess.
The knight is the only piece not to follow an orthogonal or diagonal path on the chessboard.
Furthermore the pictorical skill used as a trojan horse, confuses the waters: the illustration is betrayed from the support that hosts and the cross reference to the fight isn't only representative but existential. Those boxes have really been theatres of daily struggle against monstres and dragons created from the mind."

Vanni Cuoghi is graduated in set design at the Brera Academy, Milan. He has participated in numerous biennials in Italy and abroad, including the St. Petersburg Biennial (2008), the Prague Biennial (2009), the 54th Venice Biennale, Corderie dell'Arsenale, Padiglione Italia (2011) the 56 Biennale of Venice, Collateral Italia Docet (2015) and the Italy-China Biennale (2012) and also participated in public exhibitions at the Palazzo Reale in Milan (2007), the Haidian Exhibition Center in Beijing, on the occasion of the XXXIX Games Olympic (2008), the Liu Haisu Museum in Shanghai (2008), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Permm, Russia (2010), the Sforzesco Castle in Milan (2012) Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan (2015) Vestfossen Kunstlaboratorium Museum in Norway (2018). Since October 2015 he has held the chair of Painting at the Aldo Galli Academy in Como. Among the personal solo exhibitions, in 2011 we remember Novus Malleus Maleficarum, at San Pietro in Atrio and Pinacoteca di Palazzo Volpi in Como, in 2013, Aion at the Cremaschi Civic Museums in Crema, in 2016 from Cielo a Terra to the Jewish Museum of Bologna, in 2017 The Invisible Sun, at the Francesco Messina Museum in Milan.
