Spazio Thetis è lieto di annunciare If a clod be washed away by the sea, personale di Veronica De Giovanelli che raccoglie le opere dell’artista tematicamente dedicate al paesaggio lagunare e alle sue trasformazioni, in cui natura ed elemento antropico si confrontano e compenetrano. La mostra presenta il lavoro svolto dall’artista negli ultimi quattro anni e propone un’analisi nel contempo visiva ed emotiva del paesaggio, che viene letto attraverso l’adozione della prospettiva aerea, l'assenza di elementi di scala ed una pittura liquida, cangiante e spiazzante. L'esposizione è il primo appuntamento del ciclo Zenith, curato da Federica Bianconi, Daniele Capra ed Eleonora Mayerle.
If a clod be washed away by the sea nasce da una ricognizione continuativa ed immaginifica della laguna veneziana, territorio dalla geografia incerta in cui acqua e terra si contendono la supremazia, in un continuo rincorrersi scandito dalle maree e dagli eventi atmosferici. È un luogo d’instabilità, di cambiamento incessante, caratterizzato dalla sovrapposizione di forze naturali ed interventi umani.
I ritagli di laguna e cielo che vediamo sulla tela perdono così ogni carattere di realismo per essere visioni, proiezioni di noi stessi, in ultima istanza quasi degli autoritratti del nostro tempo attraverso lo specchio del paesaggio. Il paesaggio è infatti quell’area dai contorni sfumati in cui si riverberano, anche simbolicamente, le nostre azioni, stratificandosi con la natura. Il titolo della mostra è tratto dal celebre componimento No man is an island di John Donne, in cui il poeta inglese rivela, in un afflato struggente, di sentirsi parte di un mondo più ampio, in cui la sorte di ciascuno è irrelata a quella di tutta l’umanità.
In If a clod be washed away by the sea la De Giovanelli racconta così – attraverso una pittura caratterizzata da colori freddi come il blu o il verde, dal frequente uso di velature, dall’assenza di figura umana e da ogni preciso riferimento dimensionale – gli immensi spazi di negoziazione e conflitto tra ciò che è pertinenza del singolo e ciò che invece non può che essere di interesse comune.

Veronica De Giovanelli è nata a Trento nel 1989. Nel 2015 si diploma col massimo dei voti in Arti Visive e Discipline dello Spettacolo presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, corso di Pittura del Prof. Carlo Di Raco. Ha frequentato il corso MA Fine Arts Research and Development alla Middlesex University di Londra. È stata borsista presso la Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. Vive e lavora a Venezia e Bruxelles.

Spazio Thetis is delighted to present If a clod be washed away by the sea, a solo show by Veronica De Giovanelli. The exhibition brings together works made by the artist over a four-year period. These are based on the Venetian Lagoon, its transformations and the coexistence and mingling of anthropic and natural elements. The artist presents the visitor with a visual and emotional analysis of the landscape through the use of an aerial perspective, where the lack of elements to identify the scale create a liquid, constantly varying and astonishing vision. This exhibition is the first event of the Zenith cycle, curated by Federica Bianconi, Daniele Capra and Eleonora Mayerle.
If a clod be washed away by the sea is based on an imaginative survey through images of the Venetian Lagoon, an area of uncertain geography where water and land engage in a fight for supremacy which is influenced by the tide and the weather conditions. It’s a place of precarious balance characterized by ever changing and overlapping natural forces and human intervention.
The views of the lagoon and sky on the canvases lose all realistic details, becoming just visions, projections of our mind, a kind of self-portrait of our time reflected through the landscape. The landscape becomes a blurred area where we can see, also symbolically, the echoes of all our actions and their stratification in nature. The title of the exhibition comes from the poem No man is an island by John Donne, where the English poet is moved by the notion of feeling part of the entire world, and that the destiny of every man is linked to that of mankind.
The canvases in If a clod be washed away by the sea are painted in cool greens and blues, with frequent use of layers of colour and there is a lack of human figures and elements to give a sense of dimension. In this way the artist investigates the vast spaces of negotiation and conflict between individual and common needs.

Veronica De Giovanelli was born in Trento in 1989. She graduated with honours in Visual Arts at the Fine Art Academy in Venice in 2015 from the course taught by prof. Carlo Di Raco. She attended MA Fine Arts Research and Development at Middlesex University in London. She was awarded the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa grant. She lives and works in Venice and Brussels.
